The shady riverbanks along the fast-flowing river and rapids in Ruunaa attract anglers year after year to try their luck. The vast Lake Pielinen and countless other lakes, rivers and ponds offer year-round fishing opportunities. A speciality in Lieksa is Musta Mäntyjärvi – a lake with giant pikes.

Ruunaa is suitable for both beginners and experts, there is plenty of space for everybody, or you can enjoy your other outdoor hobbies with your friends or family. Änäkäinen 

The pristine Änäkäinen permit area is situated in the northern part of Lieksa area by Kivivaara Road on pine tree covered ridges. There are numerous ponds and lakes in the area and the sturdy row of anti-tank stones which are part of the Salpa Line defence line from WWII give the area a military historic air.
The most popular fishing spot in Änäkäinen is Lake Saarijärvi, a perfect lake to catch rainbow trout. Other catch includes sizeable perch and pike. The surrounding trails and campfire sites make Änäkäinen an ideal destination for the whole family.

Lieksanjoki 

Lieksanjoki River, part of Vuoksi waterway, ends in Lake Pielinen and gets most of its water from Russian side of the eastern border. Lieksanjoki River fishing permit area is large, and the target species include pikeperch, common whitefish, ide, pike and perch. Near Ruunaa Hiking Area it is also possible to catch planted rainbow and brown trout.

Pielinen 

Lake Pielinen, the fourth largest lake in Finland, is a versatile and wilderness-like lake. Pielinen in perfect for, for example, trolling and in the winter for winter net fishing. Native fish species in Lake Pielinen are perch, pikeperch, pike, common whitefish and grayling. Planted species include salmon, brown trout and arctic char.

Lake Suomunjärvi 

Beautiful Lake Suomunjärvi with its sandy beaches offers not only great hiking but also fishing. In Lake Suomunjärvi you can catch for example vendace, common whitefish and big perch. A proper campfire meal is made from your freshly caught fish.
